Christmas Coasters Tutorial - Bases de Natal para os copos em patchwork (como fazer passo a passo)

I just finished making these patchwork Christmas Coasters to go on my Christmas dining table. The tablecloth I am going to use is the one you see on the first photo. Just a plain dark red (a bit boring) screaming for a bit of colour. So I came up with the idea to make theses cute coasters to add a bit of fun to the table. They really are great weekend projects, quick and easy to make and really good when it comes to putting your scrap box to use. I tried to use as many bits of fabric scraps as I could! Just to make it a bit more interesting I used three different patchwork patterns. You can choose just one and go for it, or go insane (like me) and try all the different ones! What really matters is that you have fun with it!

Acabei de fazer estas bases para copos em patchwork para colocar na mesa na noite de Natal. A toalha que vou usar é a que vêm na primeira fotografia. Uma cor lisa e um tecido sem grandes detalhes (um bocadinho sem graça) que pede urgentemente elementos coloridos e divertidos. Lembrei-me de fazer umas bases para copos natalícias com cor, padrões alegres e que dessem algum dinamismo á mesa. Estas bases são um óptimo projecto de fim-de-semana, são fáceis e rápidas de fazer e excelentes para pormos a uso sobras e restinhos de tecidos que temos guardados. Não quis que fossem todas iguais, por isso, optei por fazer três padrões diferentes e gostei muito do resultado! Podem escolher fazer só um padrão e já está..ou ser louca (como eu) e fazer padrões diferentes. O que importa mesmo é que se divirtam!

1. Using a rotary cutter, cut eight, or as many as you need, 4 1/2" x 4 1/2” squares to use as the backing fabric for each coaster

1. Usando o cortador, corte oito quadrados (ou o número de bases que vai precisar) de 4 1/2" x 4 1/2” polegadas ou 11,5cm x 11,5cm para o forro das bases

Pattern A - Striped

1. Using a rotary cutter, cut six  1 1/4" x 5" stripes of different fabrics.

1. Usando o cortador corte 6 tiras de tecidos diferentes de 1 1/4" x 5" polegadas ou 3,6cm x 12,7cm

  

2. Place two different stripes of fabric right sides together, raw edges aligned, pin,  and machine stich 1/4" seam along the strip. Piece all the several strips together using this method.

2. Alinhe duas tiras de tecido uma com a outra, colocando os tecidos direito com direito. Prenda com alfinetes e cosa á máquina, a direito, usando uma margem de costura de 1/4" polegadas ou 0,6cm. Faça isto para todas as tiras

3. Press the seams open

3. Passe bem a ferro as bainhas da costura

4. Lay the backing fabric square (that you had previously cut)  right side up with the striped patchwork square right side down on top of it. Place a wadding square on top, measuring exactly the same as the backing fabric. Pin and stich trough all layers all the way around leaving an opening of about 1 1/2" along one side 

4. Coloque o tecido para o forro (que já havia cortado inicialmente) com o lado do direito virado para cima. Por cima, coloque o quadrado em patchwork com o direito virado para baixo. Por cima deste coloque um quadrado de enchimento. Prenda as diversas camadas com alfinetes, cosa tudo á volta deixando uma abertura com, mais ou menos, 1 1/2" polegadas ou 4cm , de um dos lados.

5. Snip the corners and turn the right way out. Press the square to make it easier to quilt. Hand stich the opening shut and machine quilt. In this case I quilted each stripe for a finished look.

5. Corte os cantinhos até ao limite da costura e utilizando a abertura vire de dentro para fora. Passe bem a ferro e faça um pequeno acolchoamento á máquina para que a base fique com um acabamento melhor. Neste caso acolchoei cada tira de tecido.

Pattern B - Four-patch

1. Using a rotary cutter, cut eight 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" squares of different and contrasting fabrics 

1. Usando o cortador, corte 8 quadrados de 2 3/4" x 2 3/4" polegadas ou 7cm x 7cm, escolhendo tecidos diferentes

2. With right sides together, align and pin two squares. Do the same with the other squares joining them in pairs. Machine stich using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams open.

2. Alinhe e prenda com alfinetes dois quadrados, colocando  os tecidos direito com direito. Faça o mesmo com os restantos quadrados formando pares. Cosa á máquina com uma margem de 1/4" polegadas ou 0,6cm. Passe a ferro as bainhas da costura.

3. With right sides together pin and stich two pairs, matching the centre seams. Do the same with the other remaining pairs. Machine stich using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press the seams open.

3. Colocando os tecidos direito com direito, alinhe e prenda com alfinetes um par ao outro tendo cuidado para alinhar e prender com um alfinete as bainhas do meio. Cosa á máquina com uma margem de 1/4" polegadas ou 0,6cm. Passe a ferro as bainhas da costura.

4. Repeat steps 4 and 5 of Pattern A (see above)

4. Repita os passos 4 e 5 do Padrão A (ver em cima)

Pattern C - Hourglass

1. Using a rotary cutter, cut four 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" squares of different and contrasting fabrics 

1. Usando o cortador, corte 4 quadrados de 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" polegadas ou 14cm x 14cm, usando tecidos diferentes

2. Choose two contrasting fabrics. With right sides together align and pin two squares. Using a pencil, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of one of the squares, and another line, 1/4" distance on either side of the diagonal line

2. Escolha dois tecidos diferentes. Com um lápis desenhe uma linha diagonal unindo um canto ao outro no lado avesso de um dos quadrados e outras duas linhas cada uma paralela á linha diagonal a uma distancia de 1/4" polegadas ou 0,6cm

3. Machine stich 1/4" seam on each side of the marked line

3. Cosa á máquina a 1/4" polegadas ou 0,6cm de distancia da linha diagonal

4. Using a rotary cutter cut along the pencil line. Open up the resulting triangle squares. Press the seams open

 

4. Usando o cortador, corte ao longo da linha diagonal marcada a lápis. Como resultado terá dois quadrados com dois triangulos cada um. Passe a ferro as bainhas

 

5. Place two contrasting triangle squares with right sides together making sure the seams are aligned.

 

5. Una dois quadrados com tecidos diferentes direito com direito certificando-se que as linhas de costura estão alinhadas

10. Using a pencil, mark a diagonal line from corner to corner at right angles to the seamline and pin the two triangle squares. Sew 1/4" from the pencil line on each side. Once that is done, place each square on your mat and using a rotary cutter, cut along the marked pencil line. Press the seams open

10. Usando um lápis marque, unindo um canto ao outro, uma linha diagonal perpendicular à linha da costura. Prenda com alfinetes. Cosa com uma margem de 1/4" de polegada, de um lado e do outro da linha diagonal. Coloque cada quadrado no tapete e corte ao longo da linha diagonal. Abra cada quadrado e passe a ferro as bainhas

11.Repeat steps 4 and 5 of Pattern A (see above)

Make as many coasters as you need! 

All a board!! tablecloth - Todos a bordo!!

I have had this leftover nautical theme fabric for years!!! It was given to me by a friend and at the time I had no idea what to do with it...I put it away and never gave it another thought until now! When the maritime theme came out for Le Challenge, a few days later I remembered the existence of this fabric!! Just perfect!

Tenho estes restos de tecidos de tema nautico há uma eternidade!! Foram-me dados por uma amiga minha e na altura nao fazia a minima ideia o que fazer com eles...por isso guardei-os e nunca mais pensei neles. Quando revelaram que o próximo tema para o desafio Le Challenge seria um tema marítimo lembrei-me da existencia destes tecidos...mesmo a calhar!

I decided the table we have outside in the garden needed a nice tablecloth! It's summertime and when hubby has his days off and the sun is inviting we usually eat in the garden deck and have a barbecue! I added the striped fabric to give it a "beachy" look and the linen just because i can't live without it!!

Decide que a mesa de refeições que temos no jardim estava a precisar de uma toalha. Estamos no verão e quando o Miguel está de folga aproveitamos o sol e comemos lá fora uns grelhados no carvão. Adicionei o tecido ás riscas para lembrar um pouco da praia e do mar e usei linho só mesmo porque não consigo viver sem ele!!

I couldn't take these pictures in the garden...unfortunately it was blowing a gale which makes the task impossible..

Não pude tirar estas fotos no jardim pois estava uma ventania medonha! Seria uma tarefa impossivel..

"All a Board!!!" for Le Challenge

Quick n' easy projects!

This country has been struck by a heat wave and the days have felt very lazy…My baby has been complaining a bit and I don’t know what else to do except  give him plenty of water to drink and have him wear nothing but his diaper, hoping it will make him feel a bit more comfortable. With little time on my hands but still with my undying craving for sewing, I turn to really quick and easy projects. In a couple of hours you see the results and feel really pleased with yourself!

Este país está a ser assolado por uma onda de calor e os dias acabam por se arrastar cheios de preguiça...O meu pequenote tem se queixado um pouco e já não sei mais o que fazer, excepto dar-lhe água para beber e vesti-lo só com a fralda. O meu tempo para coser tem sido muito limitado, mas a paixão pela costura é o meu vício e por isso, para poder satisfaze-lo agarro-me a pequenos projectos, rápidos e fáceis de fazer. Assim, em poucas horas veem-se resultados e sinto-me realizada!

I made these two pencil cases for my nieces (a 12 year old and a 8 year old) using fabrics from my stash and they loved it! One pencil case takes about an hour and a half to make. You can change the measures and using the same sewing method, do a cosmetics bag, a handbag organizer or a small money bag. Up to you!

Fiz estes dois estojos para as minhas sobrinhas ( uma tem 12 anos e a outra 8 ) e elas adoraram! Um estojo demora cerca de hora e meia a fazer. Podem alterar as medidas e, usando o mesmo método de costura, fazer uma pochete para a maquiagem, um organizador de carteira ou um porta-moedas. Voces decidem!

I have to be honest and say that I find it nearly impossible to finish a quilt with this heat. When I am hand-sewing the binding on the back of a quilt I usually lay it on my lap, but the wadding makes it to hot to sew. So these simple sewing projects are indeed a blessing…

Tenho que ser honesta e dizer que é quase impossivel terminar um quilt com este calor. Quando estou a coser à mão o viés ao forro, coloco normalmente o quilt no meu colo, mas o enchimento faz muito calor e torna-se dificil coser. Por isso estes pequenos projectos de costura são um benção...
